Happiness is a feeling. It can change in the blink of an eye. Imagine one moment that you just won the lottery. You won't have to go to work tomorrow. You can pay off the house and car. You can move to a tropical paradise and out of snowy Nebraska. A year later you realize that you miss the snow. You miss your old friends. You end up in rehab hooked on cocaine. Then you take your own life by hanging yourself from your bed sheet.
If you tie the your source of happiness to the things you have then it will never be enough. I watched an episode of "the worlds greatest hotrods". This "guy" had a collection of over 200 hotrods. He never drove them. I bet he walks in his garage and smiles.
I know a person who used to think pain brought happiness. This person would cut himself with a knife and it would bring him pleasure.
I know a bunch of people who are broke. They live paycheck to paycheck. They're happy most of the time. If their car breaks down they fix it. If their friend gets sick they help them. The irony is that if they were to win the lottery they'd probably be in rehab with a tied up bed sheet.
I think happiness is acceptance. Imagine driving somewhere in a heavy rain then your car breaks down. You get out to check the engine and realize your cellphone falls into a puddle. You bend over to get it and slip. Lying there in pain you stare up at dark cloud and a beautiful rain. You're powerless and a big smile forms on your face. All you can do is just accept it. You are now face to face with reality. You aren't kidding yourself anymore because you can't. You're just a pile of flesh staring into the rain
